Had this compass sent to my grandson for his birthday to go along with a tent and camping supplies. While it is late this year to use it outside, I know he will enjoy it next spring when he can again take advantage of the great outdoors. It was shipped immediately so it arrived in time for his celebration.
at first blush, its a good buy.     On: 2009-08-26

You can probably get one cheaper else where, but this one has all the basic features you would expect, its all metal, and seem to be fairly acurate.

After some field testing, Ill modify my review.
Not Only For Military Use!!!     On: 2009-07-01

let me start off by saying that this is an incredible device for land navigation!
its made out of very sturdy material and with it, youll never get lost!
notice that the product information you have to be 18 years old to purchase, i never understood why until one day a couple of my friends on my curling team (its a sport in canada) and i went on a camping trip, (no, get those thoughts out of your mind its not like that)we stayed out too late hiking and it was getting dark.

someone was throwing things at us, we thought they were rocks but upon closer investigation we discovered that they were actually NINJA STARS!

from out of the shadows a ninja appeared and he said, "I want your Military Marching Lensatic Compass! with it i can rule the world!... and really hot super model-type chicks."

i replied, "No! I will never give my Military Marching Lensatic Compass to the likes of you!"

He beat up my friends pretty easily (theyre french) and I was the only one left... it was a showdown between me, the self proclaimed champion of curling, versus this ninja.

the ninja and i fought a pretty intense fight and he actually beat me.
he opened up the Military Marching Lensatic Compass and the needle was spinning. it gave him such a headache and made him dizzy and while he was trying to run away, he fell off a cliff and exploded.

during that time, i navigated my friends to a hospital using my Military Marching Lensatic Compass.

this super model naughty nurse red headed chick asked me how i was able to find my way out of the forest and i showed her my compass and she got all hot over this and asked me if i wanted to "navigate" her to her house for some love making. - i totally did, i had to!

im glad the ninja didnt get a hold of my Military Marching Lensatic Compass because im sure he would have found some way to use it to rule the world.

ordering this comes with great responsibility, so you better be 18 like the product info says.

...oh yeah, the next person to post is a giant douche bag.
Great for the price     On: 2009-05-28

Great as a starter compass, though my only issue is the fact that the needle takes a bit longer than usual to stop rotating (even though it has a liquid filled housing). Otherwise, it is a great piece of equipment for the price. A Silva compass would also be recommended for any new-to-the-game orienteers.
The best compass I will ever own...Period     On: 2009-05-11

Where to start, the product is in a small Velcro pouch to being with and its very resilient. The compass is impressive, all the things it does are really helpful, even can range out meters with a small measurement tool so its multifunctional. Not sure whats wrong with the other reviewers, this product is so good, im buying another one right now.
Great Price     On: 2009-02-09

For the features and the durability you can not beat the price. I use this item often in my Geocaching experiences.
Great value!     On: 2009-02-06

You never know what to expect from a compass that only costs around $8.00 but this one works great. I bought one for myself and for a friend who is an archaeologist and neither of us have found anything to be wrong with it.

I would recommend this product to anyone interested.
Good for daytime usage, but not at night w/o a flashlight.     On: 2008-12-15

This is a fairly nice daytime compass, but dont plan on using it at night without a strong flashlight since the indicators are only marginally phosphorescent. They are not "florescent" (lights in an office) or "neon" (tubes in a sign) as described by some sellers. Other sellers say it has a "florescent (non-radioactive) needle for moonlight reading". I recently tested it under the nearest and brightest full moon of the year and the only way to read this otherwise fine compass at night is to have a flashlight. Hope this helps.
Bang for the buck!     On: 2008-12-04

I bought this as a backup to my Sunto. This is not your cheap discount sports store lensatic compass. The material quality is on par with products in the $100 range. There is no play in the hinge parts, and lens isnt just a cheap piece of plastic like I am used to seeing in other cheap compasses. This is a killer deal!
Happy customer     On: 2008-10-30

I am very pleased with the product its condition at arrival and speed of delivery. Thank you.
Juts Ok     On: 2008-10-03

Dont think its of a great quality as anticipated.
You get what you pay for....
Its not super accurate either and looks fancy from the outside....

Lower quality than I expected     On: 2008-09-20

Im not sure what the story is with the 5-star reviews listed here. Maybe they got a different product. I tested this out five times in the same spot while out hiking (got it out of my pocket, opened it up and leveled it to find magnetic north, then closed it and put it back in my pocket) and it pointed four slightly different directions. My old Silva clear plastic compass, on the other hand, pointed the same exact direction each time. To its credit, this compass was apparently correct on the two occasions when it agreed with itself.

In a survival situation, this compass would be better than not having one, but thats all I can say for it.
Does not seem accurate.     On: 2008-09-09

I dont think the reading on this is accurate at all because it doesnt give the correct orientation of my house. I verified this another compass as well. Besides it looks really cheap. Of course for the price I cannot expect anything sophisticated, but it should at least point correctly to North. I would not trust this one to find directions if you need to do so on a hike, camp etc.
got moneys worth.     On: 2008-07-30

shipped and received without any problems. it is nifty and has fun gadgets, but is what i paid for. inexpensive but does the job.
Excellent Compass!     On: 2008-06-13

This is the same type of compass I trained with for orienteering during my high school ROTC days. When I decided I wanted a compass for an upcoming trip, I searched for comparable models at a couple of stores.

I found a number of chintzy plastic models that cost nearly twice as much at the big box store, and I found a nearly identical model for six times as much at the army surplus store.

Even without orienteering experience (Im having to reteach myself) this is a sturdy, reliable compass that anyone can use.

I needed a good compass FAST for a Scouting project for my son. Searching through all the different ones out there, i came across this one. Two things attracted me to this - fuctional product that demonstrates how a compass works, and the great price. At less than $2.50, tied with all the features, this compass fit the need perfectly! It arrived quickly and enabled me to cover the topic i needed to cover for the Scout meeeting. Kids loved figuring out how it works!!
Evaluation of the lensatic Military marching Compass     On: 2008-04-06

I find the compass that I purchased to be all that I was promised. It is indeed a precision instument of the highest quality. Yet its rugged enough to be of constant reliability under the most adverse of field conditions.
Just right     On: 2008-03-19

Ease of use, easy to read and to top it off a very reasonable price.
Excellent Compass for the price     On: 2007-12-24

The compass was not expensive, but it has all of the features of a more expensive GI Lensatic Compass. Its a good buy and doesnt require batteries the way a GPS does.

Compass     On: 2007-10-22

The product was more than I expected. The compass is made of a heavy medal and the size is not as small as it appears and it is small enough to carry in a purse or a work bag. Great product I was surprised at the quality of the merchandise for the remarkable price.... Thank you

This is a very fine training instrument. It also would fit well in in a basic survival kit. Nothing Fancy ,it has a declination adjustment ,a good bearing line ,the fluid dampening is also very good. It dose not have luminous markings on it so you have to use a flashlight with it in the dark. I would have no problem navigating with it and a good chart (map). The shipping cost more than the compass.

this compas is of poor quality     On: 2007-10-10

I bought this after reading the previous reviews. This compass was a disappointment at first sight. The needle barely moves, and it doesnt always point to the same north- you cant really trust it with your life can you?

Also, the packaging was pretty lousy, as if it was opened ten times before.

The product will get the job done. It isnt very rugged, but it does the job.
This could one day save your life.     On: 2007-07-12

I have been in the U.S. Army for many years now and when it comes to compasses this is the only one that i will use. it is increadiblly acurate and extremly durable. the one i own (given to me by my father) i have dropped mine in the mud, sand, down the side of a hill (50 Foot drop) and mine still work perfect just as the day i bought it. for amature hikers i would recomend to us a GPS system and not rely on a compass. even for experianced hikers i recomend the GPS because using a compass is not usually an easy thing. Especially if you are lost. but as for this product if i was lost in the woods with out a GPS system i wouldnt want any other compass then this one.
