My dog loves it!     On: 2010-01-18

This is such a great doggy backpack. I take my Lab/Border collie on long runs with me and this backpack is perfect for my small water bottle, doggy poop bags, and GPS to keep track of our mileage. She looks forward to putting it on. As soon as I grab it, she sits in front of me and waits for it to be put on. My dog needed a job and this was the perfect one for her. If you have a working dog such as a lab, this will be great for them.
Great backpack, highly satisfied     On: 2009-12-18

We got an adult rescue cockapoo with behavior issues. After reading some of Cesar Milans (Dog Whisperer) books, and finding many of his ideas to reduce aggression helpful with our new guy, we wanted to try a backpack as he recommends. While he doesnt specifically recommend a backpack brand or have one of his own (as he does collars and leashes) the reviews on this one seemd pretty good. I have used it now a couple of weeks and am highly satisfied. For the price and for light use (not heavy camping, carrying a lot of gear for miles use) on our urban walks, it is great. Our shy guy needed a bit of practice with it and I needed to cinch up the straps to fit and cut off the extreme excess and heat-treat the ends of the straps, then with a few final adjustments we were good to go. Most books say you can load up to 10-15% of most dogs weight and we are part way there with a balanced load of water in water bottles. With my dog, the pack fits well and doesnt shift. I wish the belly strap snapped on the side or top, but I could redo that if I took the time. The padded frame seems to spread the load and prevent irritation. If you want a pack to increase your dogs workout and arent going to be fiddling a lot with carrying and loading/unloading a lot of specific gear, then this seems like the best pack for the price. No color choice, but we got a blue. Folks having a problem with balance on their dogs might consider sewing on some elastic loops for each back leg like our raincoat has, but you probably wont know about fit for sure until you get your pack and play a bit with it with your dog.
I shoulda dunnit years ago!     On: 2009-11-30

We got this about a week ago. Mooch and I are glad we did. She behaves much more civilized when she wears it, and now even when she doesnt. Moochs only fault was straining at the leash to get to another dog. No aggression, just sniff and shrug when she could get there, but fearsome barking and dangerous pulling when she couldnt. With the backpack (loaded with two half-liter bottles of water) she barks but doesnt pull. Her walk is different too: she keeps her tail up and theres more of a spring in her step. Its as if she thinks "Look at me! I have a job!"

Quality control could be better. The chest strap had a twist and the leash ring was in the back. Since everything goes together with buckles, it wasnt hard to make right. Now that its adjusted to Moochs size, putting it on is literally a snap. I set it on her back, pull the chest strap over her head, and snap the belly strap in place. The straps seem big enough for a large mastiff. On Mooch, who weighs 60 pounds, they are much longer than needed. Safety pins, rubber bands, or scissors can deal with that.
great for very active dogs     On: 2009-10-31

I just received the saddle bag a couple days ago, so far I am pleased with the item. After reading several reviews and seeing the price differences along with different sizing recommendations, I went with this bag. I was worried because my dog is large for his breed, however this bag fit him well, relatively quick adjustments, fitting took just a few minutes. I did not buy this for long hikes, however I have a very active dog, and needed to find a way to get him exercise without spending 2 hours out in the cold walking him. I have been putting weights in the the saddle bag and he is loving it. Now a 30 min walk is doing the same as a 1 and 1/2 hour run, great item.
dog pack     On: 2009-10-27

Dog pack slips when we walk in the neighborhood, so it would be totally insufficient to travel on trails.
Good hiking     On: 2009-10-21

Although our dog seemed a little concerned when we first tried to put it on her, within minutes she was used to it and ready to walk. We use this bag every time we go on a hike now, and she carries her own bottles of water, bowl and treats. It has slowed her down somewhat, and she pulls a little less, but those bunnies and lizards are still a temptation to this young dog. The pack fits well, is easy to get on and off, and lightens our load. Everyone is happy!
back pack for a 70 pound dog     On: 2009-10-11

This is a great backpack. The pockets are not too big so that it holds alot, but is not cumbersome on the dog. The straps are long, My medium pack straps were almost at their tightest end for my 70 pound sheppard mix. (she is lean). I would buy this again for my other dogs.
Saddle bags worked perfectly and were approved by my vet     On: 2009-09-14

This product is spacious, easy to fit on the dog, appears comfortable for the dog, and washes well. My vet thought it was great and gave me dog-specific weight recommendations for the contents.

Were very satisfied.

Dog have poor walking skills? Try this.     On: 2009-09-10

I just recently adopted my puppy from our local animal shelter, and while shes a great dog...she has A LOT of energy. Also, she wasnt properly leash trained by the people who previously owned her. I purchased this pack because of the rave reviews it got as well as learning that it is an excellent training tool. Everyone was absolutely right. This is an awesome way to drain excess energy as well as teach a puppy to calmly walk on a leash. Adding just under five pounds to it made my dog do a complete 360. She listens, shes not afraid of everything and she genuinely seems happy to have a job to do. So, if youre looking for a solution to excess energy and bad leash manners, back packs are great. The construction of this particular pack is perfect for someone just going around town. I havent hiked with it yet, but it seems sturdy enough to handle it. The material is VERY warm though (its nylon outside with fleece backing), so make sure you have plenty of water on hand.
DOG BACKPACK     On: 2009-07-01

I LOVE THE DOG BACKPACK,THE DOG LOVES WEARING IT! EASY TO FIT AND PUT ON DOG.
Doggy backpack     On: 2009-06-25

I love it and my golden retriever loves it. It is a great exercise for him and he gets to carry his own treats and water.
Good Product!!!!     On: 2009-06-07

How can I say this.....Hmmmmm. The backpack is cheaply constructed from the fabric right down to the stitching, but if you pack it lightly, I believe, it will last.

Anyway, I have to say what a difference it makes on the walks. Prior to incorporating the pack into our walks my dog was all over the place from wanting to sniff everything, scent marking what seemed like every corner to zeroing in and chasing after any small animal that had the misfortune of crossing our path.

Now, she is completely focused on the walk... One of her favorite animals to chase are rabbits and now she walks right past them because she is so focused on this extra weight on her body and getting to our destination so she can be rid of it for a while. Until the next walk. So besides improving the walk in that sense its great that she is carrying her own supplies, ie....water, collapsible bowl, bags, etc.

For light walkers, I highly recommend this product!!!!!
cheap quality.     On: 2009-05-10

The fabric is cheap nylon, thin and not meant to last. Stitching is cheap. Its difficult to keep the pack centered on my dogs back, so its a bit annoying. Id spend an extra $[...] in the future to get a better made pack. I did get the pack promptly. The seller was good, but the product is [...].
Slow your dog down     On: 2009-04-30

This is a decent product compared to some of the pricier back packs out there. Take some time to get the straps adjusted properly and you should be ok. This has definitely helped in slowing my dog down on walks and she doesnt pull as much. Some reviewers have complained about a few things, here they are and the solutions I used.
1. Belly strap being too long - either cut it and burn the nylon end or fold the excess and use a rubber band to secure.
2. Bags being to big so that water bottles or weight end up at the bottom of the bag - I used some bubble wrap to fill out the bottom of the bag and then placed the water bottles about midway.
3. Front tabs move causing chaffing - I sewed in some velcro patches to the tab and strap to keep it in place.
Overall this is good value product and with a few little adjustment is worth the money if your dog is high energy, although I would only recommend it for larger dogs as the bags are quite big. I have a 60lb 9 month Lab and it fits good.
Don't buy this product.     On: 2009-04-16

I bought this backpack for a hiking trip I was taking my dog on. It fit her just fine, but the stitching where the neck strap met the saddle bag ripped within 5 miles. That wasnt the end of the world, but 15 miles into the hike the stitching on the belly strap came completely off leaving the other end to just drag. My dog was able to finish that days hike because the weight in the bags kept it balanced. Fortunately I had a sewing kit with me and was able to repair the strap to finish the 35 mile hike. The bag design is poor and the stitching is even worse. Do not buy this bag. Spend a little more and get a better made product.
Worth the money     On: 2009-03-25

This has been the best puppy backpack I have found for the money. I use it on my german shepherd/rott mix and it fits him great, and calms him down on walks. It is large enough to hold water bottles or any other gear you may want to bring along. I usually keep first aid and my keys on one side, and a water bottle on the other. It works best if you have the weight close to even of course.
Impressive Quality at an affordable price     On: 2009-02-26

This pack rivals much more expensive packs. It is made of durable fabric, and has soft fleece lining along the packs, adjustable straps and deep pockets. My dog is about 45-50lbs now at 6 months so I appreciate the adjustable straps in case she is not done growing. The packs can easily hold water bottles, food, treats, extra leashes, baggies, anything and everything you might want to take on a day trip through the city or hiking in the canyons. Would be great for overnight camping as well. Although I would have liked to be able to choose the color, we love the teal color we received. I didnt realize this pack has the trusted Stansport name on it. I am very please and looking forward to training my dog with this pack. We will be using it for city trekking as well as mountain hiking. I would highly suggest this pack for anyone with a larger breed dog, that wants a really nice pack at a great price!
great dog backpack     On: 2009-02-09

I purchased this item for my 14 mo. old German Shepherd (110 lbs.). It is a good fit, and I use 1 frozen water bottle in each bag. Good price & I would recommend them.
Need a tired dog??     On: 2008-12-28

This is great for those who have a high energy dog and not a lot of time to get them as much exercise as they need. We have a husky who is extremely high energy and this works great for her. We put a water bottle on both sides and off we go. It does move around a little which then causes the strap under the belly to rub against the front legs. Some readjusting usually fixes that. Dog Whisperer is right. This does help calm a high energy dog which helps them become less destructive and better behaved.
Does the job, great price     On: 2008-12-26

Once you get it adjusted (and it may take a few times) it does a good job. Great price.
First Dog Pack     On: 2008-12-16

This is the first dog pack Ive ever bought... saw Caesar Milan use it on "The Dog Whisperer".. I used it on my Siberian Husky and I LOVED it. It slowed him down during walks and gives him something to work for (great for working dogs like him). It was so easy to put on, I strapped it on him immediately after opening the package. The strap around his belly is too long and will drag to the ground - NO PROBLEM. Just cut the loose end off! Theres a ton of space in both bags, enough for 2 water bottles each! I wouldnt overload the dog just yet.. I got carried away at first and my Husky didnt like it so I only let him carry a few items at first and then slowly increased. Hes really wild, runs off everywhere, and rolls in the ground. He did all this and the bag stayed on! I recommend it 100%. Also, I bought one for my 110 lbs Yellow Lab and it fit him perfectly. Would recommend the pack only for dogs 50-100 lbs. All you toy dog owners.. dont waste your time. I could fit your dog in one of the pouches!!
dog backpack     On: 2008-11-25

We got the backpack for our 1 year old mixed breed dog that is very hyper. After adjusting all the straps, which give you plenty of room for adjusting, he was off. We have added small weights as he goes to try to calm him down. It has worked and we are very pleased with the product.
Great, but could be improved     On: 2008-10-06

Bought 2: One for a lab/chow/pit mix and one for a rottie/shepherd? mix.
I put a frozen bottle of water in each side of each backpack. Then halfway through the walk I stop them and they get a drink in a collapsible bowl. (I usually walk 5 - 6 dogs at once with only 2 wearing backpack.)
Product fits ok, but needs more color and could really use some reflective strips or threading since we often walk at dusk. Also, I have noticed that the dogs do not want to sit down when wearing the backpacks. In the car on the way to walk, they stand or lay down. ? Not sure why on that one.
Great product at a great price!!     On: 2008-08-27

My 90 lbs. Chocolate Lab and I went on a week long trip to Mammoth in August. This backpack worked great!! It withstood all the hiking we did to Devils Postpile, Rainbow falls, Red Meadows, Mono Lake, Agnew lake, etc. It was a GREAT PURCHASE. I had to balance it out, but once it was balanced, it didnt fall off and it was not cumbersome for him at all. The canvas its made from looks a bit flimsy, but it withstood him rolling on the dirt, taking a nap on it, and all the branches and brush we encountered. It was a great starter backpack if you are not sure if a backpack will work on your dog. If I ever go backpacking with him, I may get him something with more straps to secure it better, but it worked great for our trip!!! REMEMBER TO PACK YOUR DOGS POOP AND THROW IT AWAY PROPERLY!!!! DONT JUST LEAVE IT ON THE TRAIL!!!
dog backpack     On: 2008-08-15

We bought this item to help with training our energetic adopted mix puppy who has grown rather large (80 lbs) and full of herself. It has helped to keep her more focused on walks. It seems to be holding up well, is easy to use, and works for us pretty much as expected. With our triple digit days we have been packing the saddle bags with reuseable freezer packs. If you are willing to take an extra couple of minutes to prep, I would recommend this item.
Great product     On: 2008-07-30

I purchased this product not really knowing all what is out there in regard to dog backpacks. I found this product to be very versatile. You really just need to adjust the straps to fit the dogs. My only concern is that while the length of the bottom strap is long, I needed to put a large clip to avoid the hanging. Other than that, my dog has the look of confidence. The material is very good. My dog carries her waste bags, two bottles of water with plenty of room for other necessities. I do recommend this. Just remember to adjust the straps to fit your dog.

Love this product. It fits perfectly on my Golden Retriever, and she loves carrying water bottles on our trips. The size of the bag is great because it is not too large or two small.
MEDIOCRE PACK, MEDIOCRE RESULTS     On: 2008-05-05

I bought this pack for my 10-month-old Pit Bull/German Shepherd Dog mix, to slow him down on our walks and help with our "dont pull the leash" training. Results are mixed.

Sam is about 65 lbs, about 23" height at his withers, with a 28" chest and the pack had to be adjusted almost to the shortest length on the belly strap. There are adjustments along the top but it took some effort due to the multiple folds of the loose strap ends.

The structure itself is decent, although the packs are quite large. Due to the short belly strap, any weights I put in them (like water bottles) fall pretty low, almost under his belly. On the good side, the padding on top is very soft with a fur-like lining. Same on the front chest strap - there are two flaps that go against the dogs chest to prevent chafing. Unfortunately, I have to adjust these flaps three or four times on a 45-minute walk because they get out of position as Sam walks.

I put the pack on empty on the first walk and Sam took to it very well. Maybe his working dog instincts kicked in. His pulling was a fraction of what it usually is and he did not seem to have any discomfort.

After that I started taking him out with our other dog, which I dont do often because both of them seem to feed on each others energy. I also added two water bottles. Unfortunately, it didnt seem to slow him down as much as when he walks alone. His pulling is a little better, but even when I increased the weights it didnt seem to slow him down significantly. Also, after only a few walks the jump ring where the leash attaches came apart and broke out of the nylon loop. Fair warning if you have a larger dog or one that is still pulling a little. I had to revert back to using his collar until I get a replacement ring.

All in all, its a decent pack, easy to use, but not the highest quality. And, for anyone looking for a miracle in dog walking progress, you may not get it. Although I see improvement, there is still much training to do.
Good product, however     On: 2008-03-18

Good product. However, the pockets are too big for my 40 lb. dog. They hang down too far and rub places on his legs when I walk him with weight in them. This would do best on a taller, bigger dog.
Saddleback     On: 2007-11-17

I slip the back strap through my dogs back legs and then clip the front straps together, the fit is perfect, but just a little difficult to place on the dog. It works well to keep him under control on the walks with about 24 oz of water bottles on each side. The strap in the front does need to be cut so it will not drag. Also, it washes well, but needs to be washed every use becauee it gets wet every time. Overall effective though.
Typical Crap From China     On: 2007-11-07

Crap. As someone who enjoys taking my dog with me nearly everywhere, Chinas crap products follow. It functions, but my husky looses all interest in life. The band around the neck should have come with a cadiliac hood ornament because it does very little, except make me bend over and repeatly reposition.
The good news; mountain smith makes a similar pack 3 times the price produced by the same innocent 9 year old at $0.14/hr. Demand more-I wish I would have.
Saddlebag for dogs     On: 2007-10-17

The dog backpack isnt as sturdy as I thought it might be and really doesnt fit my dog well, but has held together so far. My dog seems to enjoy wearing it and my goal of draining some of her energy has been met. Overall, Im satisfied with my purchase.
Backpacks work!     On: 2007-09-27

I purchased the Dog Backpack Easy Fit Saddlebag in desperation to get my German Shepherd to stop pulling me on her walks. It worked! I should have done this 2 years ago. I agree with another reviewer about this item. At first it was a little difficult to set up(10 minutes). Once done, it takes seconds. Also, there is a very long strap across the abdomen that hung to the ground. Another reviewer said they sewed it. It is easier to just cut it and burn the end. Since it is nylon, it melts the end and there is no fraying. Excellent choice! Caesar Millan would applaud you!
A good item, but not for the serious user     On: 2007-09-24

I bought two of these to use on hiking trips with my boxer and malamute. Theyre not bad packs, they have a lot of adjustable straps up top so you can fit it properly even on a barrel chested boxer. However, they only have one strap under the belly which makes the pack less stable, and in my boxers case, rubbed up against his front legs and chaffed. This same strap also tends to loosen during a hike meaning later when that same boxer decided to be a little silly and rollover the pack shifted some in addition to him getting his leg caught in the loosened strap. This pack just isnt built for more than a walk around town.
Mostly great Dog Backpack     On: 2007-08-14

I bought this pack for my Malamute puppy, but my Alaskan Husky ended up wearing it as it slides on the puppys soft fur (the Husky is four years old and doesnt have "puppy fur").

Having to change the owner aside, the pack is a great DEAL, was shipped quickly, and I jazzed it up for my Husky (shes a girl) with fabric paint.

The side bags hold plenty of bottled water (up to 4 normal sized), a colapsable water bowl, car keys, and pooch poop bags with room to spare.

You may have to play with the straps to get the item to really have a custom fit- and do this before you hit the trail as it took about 10 minutes to really fit the pack to my dog. On the plus side, once its set thats it- itll go on in a snap after that!
adjustable enough to stay put     On: 2007-06-11

I got this product to help balance my walk energy with a seventy pound Australian Shepherd (training idea seen on the Dog Whisperer). It does work. Harley carries water for both of us as well as the clean up baggies he might require.

The pack stays in place - even if Harley shakes. Only improvement it needs is a way to secure the loose end of the "waist strap" so that it stays out of the way and clean. I sewed it in place after the pack was adjusted.

This pack is solid fabric. That gives strength, but does not allow heat to escape easily.
