More Information

OK while it lasted, which wasn't very long.     On: 2008-04-19

this was given to me as a xmas gift by a friend. 14 weeks later, its dead. It had perhaps a total of 5 hours of use. No idea how to service it, and it is not going to be easy to take apart. It was OK while it worked, a bit dim I thought in comparison to my Coleman fluorescent lantern. I would certainly not buy one. Im not happy to read that this was designed to be a throw-away product, weve got too much of that going on.
Lamp does the Job     On: 2007-09-06

It lives up to expectations.Better than most others in the amount of light it gives off.
Fabulous Lantern!     On: 2007-06-09

Here in South Florida, we get some severe weather, and I bought a couple of these at Costco to have light during power outages. I love my lanterns. They are very bright. One lantern will provide enough light for an entier room. I also like the build quality of the unit; it is very sturdy.
Steelbeam florescent replacement bulbs are available     On: 2006-08-10

I love my steelbeam lanterns enough that I kept hunting for the replacement florescent bulbs after the bulb burned out of one of my four lanterns. I finally found them at Jasco Products for $8.50 including shipping. The one I received yesterday fits and lights so I feel comfortable passing on the information to all in need of replacement bulbs. Jasco Products, 10 E. Memorial Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73114 or call them 1-800-654-8483, option 4, and discribe the bulb needed.
Beautiful Lantern: but not perfect     On: 2006-07-29

This is for me a recent acquisition, great service from CAInternational! It is a terrific lantern, provides good, warm light instantly. However, I have been trying to figure out how to change the fluorescent lamp when it expires. The previous reviewer has now provided the answer to that question. Its hard to understand such a well-made and otherwise well-designed product being a throw-away. GE could charge for service after the warranty period, but they certainly ought to make lamp replacements and service available.
Nice lantern, but issues after warranty expires     On: 2006-07-20

Ive had this lantern for 4 years, using it for camping and the occasional power outage. Its a great product, providing ample light and reasonable battery life.
However, recently the light bulb broke when I dropped the light. I tried for weeks to find a replacement, both online and in hardware stores, but no luck. I finally called GE customer service and I was told that the light bulb "is not meant to be replaced". It turns out that the bulbs are proprietary for these lanterns and replacements are not available. If it happens within the 3 year warranty, you can send it in for replacement, afterwards you can "throw the light away" (these are the words from the customer service representative).
So, 1 star only for this throw-away product!

the last lantern you'll ever buy!     On: 2006-03-19

GE didnt make this, they just sold their brand name to the manufacturer which is probably why its so well designed, durable and long-lasting. Everything from the handgrip to the unusual warmth of the fluorescent light is just great. Now (of course) theyve discontinued this model and replaced it with a far inferior design. Its worth searching for this one though
Brightest, longest lasting lantern I've ever had     On: 2005-12-08

Now I live in the wilderness, depend on flashlights and lanterns and this one is simply amazing. It seems to last forever, gives an unbelieveable amount of light. It is a great light to read by.
In fact, the only flaw was, with the previous model I had hard time getting the bottom open to change the batteries when it ran out. I finally used a piece of wood with two screws in the cover trough as a fulcrum to open it. Now I grease the threads. This new model pictured here does not have that problem. (By the way the old one, still works perfectly.) And the newer model does not dim as easily if bumped. . Overall a great lantern and well worth the price.
