![]() Chuck Wagon Large Dog Backpack By: Kelty Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 7 More Information Well constructed, bad design. Just back from Backpacking in Sierras. This dog pack performed terribly. I have a 115 pound dog and used the large size pack. It kept falling off, slipping over his head and shoulders when he bent down or when descending steep switchbacks, which you do a lot of in the Sierras. Luckily I had some bungie cords and could tighten it enough to keep from coming off, but that caused my dogs skin to get rubbed raw. Thought Kelty was a top of line outfit, but this dogpack is designed for short walks in a city park. Very amateurish and I was very disappointed. Kind of makes all their products suspect if this is an example. Dont think Ill be running out to buy any Kelty equipment in the future. A new lease of life..... Both myself and my dog love this backpack. Our walks are much longer and more enjoyable for me now that I am no longer weighed down with the water bottles !! My dog took only one long walk to be convinced of the benefits. Back pack does slip sideways occasionally but I think it is my dogs crooked swagger ! Pooch packs his own gear! I purchased one of these Kelty Chucks about 4 yrs ago! Love it. What an awesome way to have Ol Copper pack his own food/bones and treat along on lengthy backpacking trips. Hes about 85# and pretty lean - This pack is so easy my young boys can put on in the morning and off we go. I can even keep extra water/supplies I want to get to quick without getting into my pack -- (Maps/etc.) The only downside Ive seen is the need to keep both side equally balance. This is a bit tricky- but hey-- we do this to our own packs as well - just a bit of effort - Towards the end of long trips, Ive actually replaced empty food space with small rocks to keep balanced - This is a quick "trail fix" when the weight is just not right. Don't Forget to Water-Proof! I purchased this product so that my "Golden Lab"could carry her own gear as well as some of my gear while she accompanies me on my back-packing adventures in north-east Michigan. The pack was some-what smaller than i expected & though it has lower zippers to expand the load, it still looked small upon her.-She is a very large dog & i guess i just wish "Kelty" made a extra-large pack. My only real complaint is that its not water-proof or even resistant. Everything inside the pack got wet, & fast! Although it was my over-sight for not applying a water-proof product prior to our week-long voyage,i am a little disappointed that [for the price] "Kelty" did not anticipate this need. --Other than those over-sights, its a well made product that will make "Your Special buddy"feel proud he/shes carrying their own weight! Backpacks for the "kids" Kelty Backpacks - Bubba my nine year old black Lab mix and Gabriel, my one year old yellow Lab mix LOVE their backpacks. Inside each packet is a bottle of spring water, plastic bag and a sheet of paper to pickup their poop, just in case. It helps in their workout, they walk almost everyday, to keep them in best of shape. Their bodies, muscular and lean. They position themselves, so it is easy for me to slip on their bags. For summertime, I will put frozen water bottle to keep them cool and by the time were done walking, the water will thaw and ready to drink. An excellent backpack for a GSP I used the medium sized version of this back pack with Kasia, a good sized female, for a couple of years before she died of cancer. We plan to get a new puppy this summer, and well be hiking with her by the fall if all goes well. Kasia was big, but tall, leggy and quite slim and the large size was just too loose. If our new dog has a bigger chest, well move up a size, but stick with this brand. Our dog just loved it when I broke out her pack -- absolute joy! And, she learned to wear it after only two outings. The biggest problems were close quarters between trees and rocks, where she couldnt slither through. And, in fairness, I took even longer to learn that when she refused to go, it was because the gap was just too narrow. Of course, GSPs are much smarter than this owner. Robert C. Jasch writes: Doggy backpack. Let your dog carry his own gear. Check that packs are reinforced in areas that might scrape against rocks, have reflective areas for night hiking, are padded for a comfortable fit. A bright-colored pack will make your dog more visible during hunting season or if lost. And she suggests that your dogs bag should carry: Basic first-aid kit [and location of closest to trailhead 24 hour vet]. Dog food and trail treats. Keep your dog extra well fed on the trail since he will burn more calories than usual. Bring extra snacks in case you get lost and spend the night in the woods. Train your dog to carry his own food and water. Water and water bowl. Dont count on finding water along the trail. Pack enough for the entire day. A good rule of thumb is 3 liters of water for your dogs day hike. [My dog carries a quart for each 30 pounds of dog weight.] Insect repellent unless your dog is allergic. Dog booties. Booties can be used to keep bandages secure if the dog damages his pads, or to protect against snowballs between the toes that melt, freeze, and cut, causing lameness. Plastic bags and trowel. Be courteous and leave the trail as you found it. Carry out your dogs waste in places that require it. On other trails, dig a hole and bury it. *** Our dog just loved it when I broke out her pack -- absolute joy! And, she learned to wear it after only two outings. Great dog backpack I highly recommend this backpack. Having a very active German shepherd dog that needs to be exercised every day, this backpack is very easy to use. The backpack is very comfortable and once adjusted all you do is slip it over your dogs head and snap it underneath the stomach area. It fits perfectly. The only problem is the extra straps underneath (I just tied them in a knot). Also make sure you have even weight on both sides. Ive tried other backpacks from pet stores and they are CHEAP!!! This backpack works nicely for my 80 pound German shepherd. Great dog backpack I highly recommend this backpack.
