Great for early morning tailgating For the price, this oven is great. Obviously, it does not work as well as the oven in your kitchen, but that is expected. We love it for tailgating - bake muffins in the morning, and then around lunchtime, heat up chili cheese dip. Fantastic. Hot little oven Have used oven twice and have cooked biscuits, casseroles, breakfast eggs and have had super results. Have to watch out if the wind is blowing as the temp. will not maintain. I just put up cardboard wind blocks around it and it maintained the required temp. Great Idea I bought this oven for a camping trip with my daughter. The oven worked quite well and held the temperature fairly easily. Wish it was be a little more of an oblong shape to accommodate a bit bigger pan. Overall, very pleased. Works well and it adds another facet to camp cooking. Highly recommend this product. coleman camp oven Im on the second summer with this little oven and love it. Ive only cooked baked potatoes and canned biscuits in it and it works great. Took an hour to do the potatoes and I think that was because of so much wind. The biscuits I cooked just like the instructions said on the bicuit lable and they turned out great, again the wind effects the cooking time. A friend of mine has done Mrs Smiths pies and he said his turned out great. I would recommend this to anyone. I havent checked to see if the temp gauge is right on or not. Like any other cooking, just keep you eye on it while its cooking and you will be pleased with the results I think. I purchased this from Amazon. Camp Oven Patience is the key to this product. First get you a good oven thermometer and place in the center of the oven and turn on the gas. Let the oven heat for at least 15 min. Check the temperature on the out side thermometer and then check the inside. Create a ratio. Example: when the outside thermometer reads 225 degrees the inside is 350 degrees, so when I want a 350 degree oven I hold the outside temperature to 225 degrees. If there is not other alternative We tried and tried this thing and it will not come up to temperature. Big burner small burner. Finally a wrap of aluminum foil helped, more the better looked like the dough boy. Its a task. Look, its fun to use, its just not an oven, its kinda a warm warmer. Yes, given enough tin foil and time it would bake some cookies. Got rid of it. If you use it in a warm camper you have a better chance. Oh My Gosh! This is an awesome addition to all the "normal" / ordinary camp stuff we bring along. It was so easy to set up (instantly) and did everything and more than I thought it would. You have to try it! My lasagna came out perfect, muffins were great! bisquits better than at home in my big oven. I Just cant say enough about this little oven. Try it! Rhonda Welzel Happy Baking; Happy Eating; Happy Camping! I have seen these ovens on store shelves most of my life. I was certain that a little aluminum box could not function as an oven. But recently, we were embarking on a 10-day camping trip, and I was going to need to bake while we were there. I am pretty adept at baking with coals from a campfire or a charcoal fire, but on the trip in question, there was a burn ban in effect. What to do? I got on Amazon and read reviews about the Coleman Camp Oven, and decided that if my original opinion was correct, Coleman wouldnt still be making this little gem. I purchased the oven and it arrived when promised. We took it to the campground, and were totally amazed at how beautifully it worked. We baked brownies, biscuits, potatoes, cornbread and even gluten-free hamburger buns and rolls. Everything was wonderful. The oven was easy to set up and use. But it is not like baking at home in your regular oven. Tips you should know: > Only use the oven on a camp stove. Try to get your stove as level as possible. > Start warming it up with a low flame, and increase the stove flame as the oven begins to pre-heat. > Plan to use small bakeware. Coleman suggests 8x8 pans. Here are some products that we found worked well: * Nordic Ware Toaster Oven Baking Sheet * Ekco mini muffin pan for 12 muffins * Fox Run Set of Four English Muffin Rings (for the burger buns) on the baking sheet * MSR Blacklite Fry Pan * 8x8 foil pan > After your food is in the oven, you really need to watch the temperature gauge from time to time. The longer it bakes, the more likely you will need to adjust the stove flame to regulate the temperature inside the oven. This is NOT set-it-and-forget-it baking. > We found that timing was pretty close to baking at home, as long as the temperature was constant. > Try not to peek too often. Peeking lowers the internal temperature. Look when you need to & thats all. > Clean up spills (outside and inside) as soon as the oven cools. Dont let gunk bake on during the next use. The oven folds up quickly when it is time to pack up. We keep it in its original box, and it is ready to go! I still love the thrill of accomplishment of baking using a campfire, but this little oven is a great addition for those times when a fire is not convenient. May we all have many years of excellent campground baking! Happy Camping! Happy Baking! Happy Eating! Amazing Love this little oven. It workes great, it is lightweght, compacts easily, and functional. My pies were amazing! I even made lasagne! If you are looking for an oven, buy this one. Added capability This item performed pretty much as described. I have just used it over a propane stove twice and both time it worked well. I did a pot pie and baked some biscuits. The temp gauge is not accurate, but as long as you watch the food, everything came out great. It is more of a relative indicator rather than a gauge. I also used it to keep food warm while I was cooking something else, and it work well for that. Camp cooking This wonderful little oven has provided our family with some great food while we were camping without having to use our dutch ovens. Weve made triple corn casserole to have with dinner, banana nut muffins for breakfast and cinnamon rolls that pulled even the most reluctant out of their sleeping bags! Because we camp in a high altitude area, we needed to adjust the recipes and cooking time a little bit, but after a couple of tries, everything is working out just fine. This is a great little oven for those nice things that make a meal wonderful without all the fuss of building a fire or waiting for charcoal for dutch ovens early in the morning. Imagine hot cinnamon rolls with gooey frosting and coffee all done at the same time. I would recommend this for anyone that enjoys some baked items on their camping trips without all the extra fuss. Do you like cooking, camping & gadgets? BUY THIS! Took this camping for the 1st time and made rolls in it for dinner (the kind that come in the tube) we didnt wait very long, and WOW we had hot rolls with our stew. I am a seasoned camping veteran and was VERY happy with this oven. It is small, but will accomodate an 8x8 pan. Very nice to have along. Cant wait to make cinnamon rolls :-) If you really enjoy gadgets, camping and cooking - BUY THIS!!! Works great for Big Camp. No Big Camp kitchen is complete without this oven. For my wife and I, Big Camp is all about making great meals with a great view. Those dehydrated bag meals are fine for light weight backpacking, but if its Big Camp, then were out to push the limits. No Beanie Weenie for me! Our Big Camp kitchen includes a Primus Atle 2-Burner Stove, a Primus Atle BBQ Grill/Stove, a GSI Pinnacle Griddle and this Coleman oven. That all fits in this Mountainsmith Large Zip-Top Tote for rapid deployment. It all connects to a 10lb refillable propane tank. We also use the GSI Outdoors Bugaboo Pots and I really like them. Thats a serious camp kitchen even Alton Brown would appreciate. As far as this oven goes, I really like it. Ive had great success with tube cookies, rolls and croissants as well as brownies and quick bread mixes even at high altitude. Ive baked breakfast casseroles just below treeline. This past weekend (6/13) we baked cornbread to go with the fresh pan seared trout. This is no Viking Range. This is a rudimentary folding metal box, but it works. Baking with this can be an active sport and you have to pay attention. The thermodynamic properties of aluminized steel are beyond the scope of this review, but suffice it to say that one should not initially turn the burner on full blast or the box will not heat evenly and could warp. Likewise, one should not place this directly over a camp fire. For campfire cooking, get a dutch oven. I have baked great things in those too. For this oven, I keep the burner low at first and let it all heat up slowly to about 200. I then turn up the burner and let it slowly rise to 350/375. It then requires adjusting the stove burner every few minutes to keep the temperature even. By "even" I mean between 350 and 400. I havent warped it yet. I looked seriously at the Coleman InstaStart Portable Oven and the Camp Chef Camp Oven, but this simple box cant be beat for portability. I could carry three camp stoves and this oven in the space that one of those other ovens takes up and those things are expensive. Maybe this winter, Ill make a cover to increase the ovens efficiency. I could use aluminized fiberglass ~something like this~ or simply lay a Silicone Bake Mat over it. In addition to the GSI pots and pans, we also have some silicone bakeware because its lightweight and smashable. We dont bring this oven on every camping adventure, but there is something really fun about preparing great meals that include fresh baked things way out in the middle of the woods. P.S. Its generally a good idea to keep the camp kitchen away from ones sleeping tent. Thats not always possible in developed campgrounds. We keep our camp clean, lock it all up at night and have never had a bear or raccoon problem. Its work, but organization is the key. Ive found Mountainsmith Cubes and Eagle Creek Cubes to be a great way of color coding all the gear. Happy camping! nice easy to set up and take down. only used it once so far but the cinnamon biscuits turned out pretty good. with practice this oven will be the next best thing to taking the kitchen stove camping. Happy Baker This is a great little oven, very well constructed and works great. Nice hot corn bread for breakfast, cant be beat. This is a fun addition to camping. I have even used it on the fire place, when you need something like biscuits, they only take 10 to 15 min. anyway so it works, just keep a eye on it. I just bought my brother one too. Coleman Camp Stove Frankly this little oven amazed me. I used it to bake biscuits for a group of 9 people. One needs to be careful to control the heat, but it provide all that it promised. Great fun for your next camping trip! This is a great item if you want to have a little fun and impress your friends during your next camping trip. I used the oven in conjunction with my two burner Coleman stove. Unlike some of the other reviews, I found the temperature to be reliable and fairly easy to adjust by changing the flame setting on my stove. I tried two items during my recent trip -- apple pie & fudge -- both came out great. I suspect that some folks may be attempting to place this on an open camp fire, which I probably wouldnt recommend. Excellent for camping My old camp oven from Coleman was over 30 years old. I bought this one to replace the old one. These are very well built and perfect to use over a propane stove. I have baked chicken, cookies, cakes, pizza, and just about anything else you cold think of. This is a GREAT thing to have for outdoorsmen. Coleman Camp Oven The oven works very well just as advertised. Hot cinnamon rolls in the morning! it works:) We are going camping next month, so we bought this oven as an extra way of cooking things (like biscuits.) We tried it out, just to see how well it works. We used it with our Coleman Road Trip Pro Grill which we plan on taking with us camping (but also use at home quite often.) As long as you watch the temperature gague(on the front of the oven) then you should do fine, it worked great with our biscuits at breakfast. it also folds up flat which makes it good for packing for a camping trip. rack missing This was ordered to replace the same product destroyed in a fire. Ive used them for years over a Coleman multi-fuel stove, and they work fine for baking. I was disappointed when the package for this new one did not contain the internal shelf. Id give it 4 or 5 stars if it was complete. Brilliant idea - lousy quality We did not buy that oven for warming up some sandwiches or pizza slices but to bake breads & cakes when we are out in the woods. And thats where we are most of the time. Pro: Yes, you can bake your breads & cakes in that oven. It takes a few attempts to figure out the right temperature and baking time .... but then it works (somehow). Cons: After the first use, the oven starts twisting, the upper & lower panels behave like springs and cannot be bended back into their original position. After each time the oven has been used, it becomes more difficult to fold it resp. to set it up again. Due to this circumstances, the oven looses a lot of heat and heats uneven. ..... and be aware of the handle. It becomes as hot as the oven itself. Summary: We always look for alternatives before we decide for one product. Unfortunately there is none, as far as we know, for that specific oven (the only "alternative" is NOT foldable & operates with propane) .... but if there were one around, it could only be better. Portable Camp Stove that really works Coleman has a reputation for delivering the great out doors and this product does that, it allows you to have an oven on your Coleman stove any where you need it, it also doubles as a food warmer. Face how many of you can get all the items in a meal cooked to perfection at the same time with only two burners. Yes, another stove would help but be realistic. This product is quick to set up and it cools down very quickly for packout after the meal is donw. If you want a light weight addition to your galley or chuckwagon this item will do the trick. A worthwhile addition to your camp I have had a coleman camp oven for many years. The coleman camp oven will add a new dimension to your camp cooking. This little folding steel box (about a 1 foot square area) will allow you to bake items that you wish you could have had with your camp meal in the past. Its easy to unfold and set up and then easy to refold and pack away. It has an adjustable shelf to accomodate various size items. It fits over the burner on your camp stove and will take up about half the area of a two burner stove. Turn up the heat on the stove burner and monitor the temperature guage on the oven door, when oven is at the desired temperature put whatever item you want to bake into the oven and then wait...wait... wait. Thats probably the main drawback to this oven is that it takes a long time to bake anything in it. However if you want biscuts or other baked item with your meal then the Coleman camp oven is about the only game in town. All in all the Coleman camp oven is a worthwhile addition to your camp cooking equipment. Works great. Easy to use. A++++ If you have ever owned anything Coleman than you already know the quality. This oven sets up in seconds, very easy to use, packs small, and lets you add a whole new menu to your camp. |
