great for beach     On: 2008-07-14

After youve put it together the first time, it gets quicker and easier. Nice shade and the zipper window allows for a pleasant breeze. Great for my 4 month old at the beach.
It works     On: 2008-07-08

It provides good protection from the sun. Its fairly stable even during windy days.
The assembly instruction is not very clear: the first time it took me almost 1/2 hour to assemble it. Otherwise, it takes 5-10 minutes.
Nice shady spot for a baby's nap     On: 2008-07-06

We purchased the Coleman Road Trip Beach Shelter for our Hilton Head vacation. It was easy to set up and take downs as it folds into a small pouch - stayed put in the wind and gave us plenty of protection from sun, wind and sand especially for naps for our 6 month old! It had plenty of room for a couple of adults, also. Highly recommended.
Great beach tent but hard to get together in the wind     On: 2008-06-23

This beach tent was really easy to put together when there was little to no wind. During a windy day at the beach, it really takes more than 1 person to put together because it catches the wind and wants to take off. Other than that it was great for the beach to keep my wife, baby, and I out of the sun. With the front open, 3-4 adults can lay inside easily. With the front closed, probably only 2 adults and a child can fit comfortably. Fabric and design seem to be high quality. For the price, it is a tough deal to beat!
Truly Pleasurable Beach Experience     On: 2008-05-24

Living in South Florida, the beachese are a part of life. With two little ones (2 and 5) and another on the way, the sun is a problem. This beach shelter is the solution.

First of all, I have to say this gets four stars instead of five for one simple reason-- the first time we tried this was a mess-- a comedic typical mess in retrospect but not a fun one on the hot sand under a hot sun with a 5 year old itching for the water and a 2 year old hating being on the sand and being hot. It also didnt help I was 8 months pregnant and my husband had to pretty much do it on his own with only guidance from me. I think the problem for us was we got confused between the window and the door. My husband got really frustrated and gave up on the thing. I calmly sat and looked the directions over, and played with the flapping fabric while he coated the kids in sunblock and realized our mistake. Once we figured that we had gotten things mixed up, it was up in about five minutes. And that is not an exagerration. The other mistake we made was we used the stakes instead of the sand bag method. Although the stakes worked for most of the tent, there was one corner that kept coming up and when I read through the instructions and saw the sand bag section, I fixed it and that was the end of that. Take down was really simple. The beach experience was awesome. My daughter and I spent most of the time in the comfy shade with the wind blowing through. I put up the wet clothes on the line inside, and hung up the bag with stuff in it. This shelter is a MUST even if you dont have little ones. It keeps your things out of sight, cool, and comfy. I am really glad we got it and that we stuck it out through the first attempt at set up.
This is a GREAT product!     On: 2008-05-08

I love getting out to the beach as much as time will permit and this little shelter has already allowed me to prolong my early season stays. Its light, easy to carry, and even easier to set up and break down. Even in the wind! It was also much larger than I imagined. Two people can easily zip the door up and comfortably turn in for a little nap. Its like having a little home right on the beach!
Great Sun Protection.     On: 2007-10-22

This product is great. Its very easy to assemble, and gives excellent protection from the sun. Its large enough for two adults to sit it, and our baby had a nice amount of room.

The only problem I noticed is that the threads along the floor seam are coming loose after one week of use. I dont know if the threads were like that when I opened the box. It could have been a defect or just low quality stitching. Ill probably give Coleman a call before I use it again.

Despite my minor problems I still really like the tent.
Decent shelter     On: 2007-09-17

This is a decent shelter for the beach. When I first set it up I didnt think that it would last very long when a decent wind came along. I was pleasantly surprised when the wind started blowing and the shelter kept its footing. The key to a stable setup for me was to bury the sandbags that are included as deep as you can.

Id recommend this shelter for anyone with kids. It provides a nice place for the kids to relax and rest out of the sun without having to go back inside. Its also a nice spot to watch the kids from if youre sensitive to the sun like I am.
Great weekend beach shelter     On: 2007-09-14

Think of it as 1/2 a dome tent. Its a pretty decent setup and well made...maybe not completely beach ready tho.

Sand in the shock poles can make it next to impossible to take apart at the end of the day and the whole thing doesnt drain sand_at_all. Get ready to do a lot of shaking.

If you plan to be on the beach for the entire day, its a great shelter to bring along. If youre going down for a few hours, just bring an umbrealla. This would be a little too much effort to put up and tear down.

Quality Nightmare.     On: 2007-08-31

I camp a lot and this shelter makes tent #6 for me. After reading all the great reviews, I purchased this in order to have our infant on the beach. I dont know what Coleman was thinking. The sleeves that you insert the fiberglass "poles" in to are made of a weak mesh. The metal tips on the poles ripped through the mesh the first time I set this up on the beach, and only continued to rip as the vacation went on. Forget about setting it up in wind. Im disappointed with the product.
LOVE IT!!!     On: 2007-07-11

This beach tent is very easy to use and can be set-up by one person easily (once you get the hang of it the first time). One recommendation - dont try to set it up in 30 mile an hour winds like my foolish husband insisted on doing - you will not be successful! However, with proper use, this definitely provides shade and shelter for adults and kids at the beach. A great product! Better than an umbrella!

Good Value. Great Sun Protection. Must for infants.     On: 2007-07-03

Did the job of protecting mom & baby from sun. Lots of room. Easy set-up/take-down (we had two people to set it up while mom held the baby - might be a little hard with only one - no harder then other tents?). Light weight and small; easy to transport and store. Sand in zipper bags put inside the sand bags was a good tip I got. Back door was great cross vent (we only unzipped it a bit so we got the breeze but no sun). The one day it was very windy we struggled a bit, but putting friends beach bags inside the corners of the tent helped and they were glad to store their stuff in our tent. A 3-4" paint brush works great for sweeping out the tent while youre in it (or sweeping off your feet before going in).
GREAT shadescreen     On: 2007-03-09

Very durable easy to set up. Perfect for our trip to Maui.
Kept us from getting a wicked burn and ruining the trip.
You can close the front to have room for changing if necessary but we didnt try this.

Perfect Beach Tent     On: 2007-01-18

We bought this tent to use on the beach in Florida this year. It was easy to set up, withstood some decent wind and was just the right size for two beach-goers and a miniature dachshund. Though set up is a breeze, Id suggest familiarizing oneself with the product before heading to the beach, as the wind can be an added hinderance. Break down was also a snap and the tent rolled right back up and stores neatly away. The bag that holds the product can be used to hold items up off the sand too. Overall, this product was exactly what we were looking for. Highly recommended, especially at the Amazon.com price that we paid. They beat all competitors, even when including the shipping cost.
very good beach/picnic shelter     On: 2006-11-10

This shelter takes a lot more effort to errect than the pop up shelters but it is worth the effort as it is much sturdier, you can also zip up the door to make a privacy screen for getting changed.

Went to Bermuda with my 6 month old daughter Samantha. The beach would have been a disaster if it were not for this sun shelter. It set up fast and did the trick!!!!!
Great tent!     On: 2006-08-26

We bought this tent to use at the beach with our 18 month old. Its easy to set up and transport and the stakes work great in the sand. This tent is a great place to take a break from the sun, eat lunch and take naps. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Beach shade     On: 2006-08-25

The Coleman Beach Shelter mostly worked just as its described. It is light, easy to set up once youve done it once, and wind resistant when you follow the directions for burying the sand bags. It is large enough to use 2 sand chairs. I found it to be most comfortable when sitting on a towel. It was helpful as a shaded play space for small children. When a storm arrived I had to take it down as the wind was too much for its anchors. Otherwise it provided a welcome relief from the sun.

This is an excellent beach shelter at a great price! We are a family of 6 and this shelter did the job! It is easy to spot on a busy beach. It holds up great in the wind when sand bags are used (we found wet sand works best). Our baby slept great protected from wind, sand and sun! It can be a little tricky putting it up in wind and hot sand, but took only about 5 minutes, once we knew what we were doing. (You might want to take a dry run at putting it together before you are standing on the beach trying to keep track of all your children! :) If you are looking for something more than an umbrella to set up "home base" at the beach, pool, park etc., then this is a great item!
Everything is just wonderful with the product, it's the packaging that we have a problem with.     On: 2006-08-05

For our family vacation, we decided to research for a portable beach shelter. We were not only thrilled to find your product but the fact that it was a Colemans sold us right away. Well, it arrived today and we are so happy with it, cant wait to test it out on the shores of Maryland. We do, however, have a greater concern and that is about the shipping materials.

With todays concerns about landfill, global warming, etc., we are happy to see when companies use the air bags packing method, which the Coleman people did. This is what they did not do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The packing dept. did not use these wonderful airbags full of air, instead they threw 75 pieces or so around the small box to be shipped into a much larger box with NO AIR IN THEM. These airbags are designed to cut down on shipping costs as well as enviormental concerns. Bottome line, if you dont know how to use the product why bother using it?

We are very passionate about this issue and if someone would like to discuss this we are all ears. There does not seem to be a customer service link to any of this areas so if someone from Coleman would like to email us that would be great.

I do look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thank You,
Kathryn Brinkrode
Give Me Shelter     On: 2006-08-03

Not too difficult to put up after a little practice. Gave the shade that I was looking for but second use, shock cord broke on main pole. Warranty should cover this but a hassle to send back after only 2 uses.
I'm surprised that there aren't more people on the beach with one of these!     On: 2006-07-17

We used our beach shelter today for the first time in San Diego, CA - had a few people actually stop and ask us where we got it. We didnt see another one (or any other type of beach tent) on the beach at all!

Like the other reviews stated, it was easy to set up and easy to break down. Not as easy as popping up an umbrella, which is probably why there werent any on the beach. I would say it took the two of us about 12 minutes to set up and about as much to break down (where an umbrella takes about 30 seconds) - next time itll be quicker Im sure, but even so its well worth the small effort.

The front zippered flap that folds out and lays flat does indeed have two spikes to hold it. I wonder if the other reviewer just got shorted. I can see also that the metal spikes could be easily lost in the sand, Im sure our local REI can hook us up with some heavy duty plastic versions.

Something not mentioned is that the mesh bag that the tent comes in has hooks built into it so that you can clip it to the inside top of the tent and use it as a pouch to store stuff off the ground. Very handy!

We have two of those "Rio" brand beach chairs and were able to both sit inside the tent when we wanted to be in the shade.

I looked at several different tents, and most of them cost twice as much. This tent was indeed a bargain and I highly recommend it.

Nice size & great for kids     On: 2005-09-04

We ordered this cabana because we wanted something to protect our 1 year old from the sun at the beach, with more coverage than an umbrella. Weve used this once at the beach so far, and it seems to do the job pretty well. Its pretty easy to set up, though not as easy as the pop-up versions -- but those usually cost significantly more. Its very lightweight, too. My husband, my baby, and I fit comfortably under the shade in sitting positions, and could stretch out with our legs sticking out, too, with minimal sun exposure.

Some criticisms: 1) I think they should include two more stakes for the "door" so you can secure it in the down position. 2) It would be better if there were some smaller "windows" higher up, other than the rear window/door. The way it is now, you only get air flow by opening the rear window/door, and in certain conditions, this would significantly reduce your shade area in the cabana. 3) When at the beach, its a little tough to fold up the fabric properly without trapping sand in it. Beaches are usually fairly breezy, and if you try to fold it from being flattened on the ground (as is the proper way), the flapping fabric and blowing sand is quite annoying.

In short, if you dont want to spend twice as much money for the pop-up, spring type, then this should suit you just fine.

love this beach shelter     On: 2005-08-14

Our family of 4 brought this beach shelter to Maui last week and used it at the Black Rock. It was hot and we really liked having the Coleman quality (we have a Coleman camping tent) and ease of setting up/taking down the shelter. And not to mention, we didnt have to spend $$$ and hassle with reserving cabanas or umbrellas.
Must have for an infant at the beach!     On: 2005-08-06

I took this shelter on our beach vacation and I couldnt have lived without it. It sets up easily and breaks down just as easy. I have a 7 month old and he pretty much lived in there while we were at the beach. I love the privacy door for nursing. The older kids did a quick change too! It also has a back window/door that can either be a screen or a wide open door for air to pass through. On hot days at the beach it was a nice option to leave the door open to get a breeze. The only drawback is it comes with stainless steel stakes which I find to be useless at the beach. I have already lost a few in the sand. If it came with the plastic camping ones I think that would be a better fit. I definitely recommend this product.
