Good Buy NOT Good Bye!     On: 2008-07-22

First, let me tell you that I have never owned a compass, and I believe that I have only held one once before in my life. I got a $20 Amazon.com gift certificate from my brother-in-law and instead of buying a DVD, I decided to get someting a little more adventurous for an upcoming camping trip. So, I came up with the idea of buying a compass.

The compass selection ranges from many really low end, to one moderate priced, to many on the high end side. Since the gift certificate for for $20, I searched in that price range. The Silva Lensatic 360 was really my only choice for the $20 range.

When I got the compass, it looked and felt good. It feels solid for the price. The W points in the direction of where the sun sets in my backyard, and it points to E where the sun rises in my front yard, so the accuracy is good enough for me. I really feel like going for a hike in the wilderness, but since Im a novice hiker, I should first read the book that I ordered w/ the compass ( The Essential Wilderness Navigator: How to Find Your Way in the Great Outdoors by Seidman).
Darn Good Compass!!     On: 2008-06-04

This is the One     On: 2008-05-27

Sometimes you can just pick up an object and you know it is well made. The Silva Lensatic 360 Compass is one of those objects.

The body is very solidly built aluminum. The pieces fit together well, and, most importantly, the hinges for the cover and the magnifying glass dont feel cheap, like they will snap off with repeated use.

The compass itself works great and "centers" in only a few seconds. The crystal is engraved with two sighting lines, so no worries about these lines wearing off over time. The bezel luminesces well at night.

The bottom line is that this is a great lower end compass at a great price and this guy will be in my pack for years to come.
Great Value     On: 2008-04-01

I wanted a good compass for a reasonable price and this compass is perfect for me. Unlike my previous experience with compasses, it is very easy to use. I was impressed with how rugged the case is. This compass will come with me on all my hikes.
Well built, tough, accurate, buy it ........     On: 2008-01-19

Well built, accurate compass for those times when the batteries in your GPS are dead, or you just want to bushwhack old school. Leave the GPS at home, then try to find the shortcut through your favorite swamp or forest using this tough and user friendly navigation tool. If you get lost, blame it on Darwinism, not the Silva Lensatic 360 you should have with you !!! };>{>

Very nice!     On: 2007-12-23

This is a very nice compass. Just the right size for easy reading but easily fits in a pocket. Stays closed, but can be opened with one hand.

Good value, too.

Lensmatic Compass     On: 2007-12-08

The damping on this compass is very good - it comes it rest precisely in a few seconds. It is very rugged. I have dropped it with no effect and it has an ergonomic design. It is very easy to take a bearing. Excellent value for the money.
Somewhat unreliable compass, buy a more expensive one for professional use     On: 2007-12-01

If you are looking for a reliable, fast working compass, Silva Lensatic 360 Compass is probably not what exactly you are expecting. It usually takes more than 15 seconds to stabilize and finally identify some direction as north. What is worse is, the direction it points to is sometimes not north. Especially you are using it in a city that has a wide spread public transportation, such as Chicago, it gets effected by the magnetic field created by the electricity used to operate the trains, all too easily. This means you will have trouble using your compass when you are less than 100ft away from an electricity operated rail-track (not just the train, though the trains make it go completely haywire). I used other compasses in similar conditions and I must say they all outperformed this buddy. Dont get me wrong, this can be a good choice for light camping and etc, but it is definitely not a professional tool. I would have returned it already but I do not want to pay for the shipment, and finally decided to give it to my young nephew as a toy.
Bulletproof     On: 2007-10-06

I bought this compass several months ago, and it has worked flawlessly. In addition, I have accidentally dropped it onto concrete and other very hard surfaces numerous times, and it continues to work perfectly. I am more than pleased with it; it was well worth the price.
silva compass, perfect for the everyman...     On: 2007-02-02

This compass is not only affordable but is also made very well. It is very sturdy and made with a heavy metal that wont likely break without a fight. It is very clearly marked for finding north and super accurate. Without a doubt the best buy online for a compass.

Pretty good     On: 2006-08-29

This is a much better handling compass than the Brunton engineer lensatic style compass. The one weakness of this model is the spinning lid. It is nice to have but it makes it easy to take a wrong bearing because the lid spins too freely. Also, there is no detent or marking for exact alignment with the physical case - you have to guess.

Other than the poor top spinning lid, this lensatic compass is quite superior to the compeditors offering.
