pole lock no longer works     On: 2008-11-12

i havent had any problems with tips falling out, but the adjustable pole lock no longer works on one of the poles, no matter which way i screw the thing. very unfortunate, because otherwise this seems to be a decent product for very little money.
The pole is good the attachments suck     On: 2008-10-13

Well going by the name the only thing they intended you keep is the pole. There is no place to keep the cap (It keeps falling off the little area near the bottom guard constructed for that purpose). Looks like a very well design that the chinese have done as little as possible to meet the letter of the design but not the spirit.

The paint scratches easily, but doesnt affect performance.

Havent seen the tip fall off yet, but if it does the pole is pretty much useless as it will start to flower at the bottom.

Generally like swiss gear, but this has all the makings of chinese gear with an appropriate sticker (whatever you want coleman or swiss gear).

Bought em at Wal-mart for cheap. Brush guard fell off inside of 100 meters - pole lock broke and collapsed in less than 2 miles. Save yourself the hassle and invest in something more substantial - ya get what ya pay for.
Value for money     On: 2008-09-16

This is my first hiking pole. I am very happy with the quality and functionality. I have been using this product for more than a month now. It provides the necessary support when hiking. The end cap has so far held on. Value for money!
Hiking pole review     On: 2008-08-17

I ordered 3 hiking poles they came in separate large boxes wasting resources. Two poles were in good shape and came in damaged boxes. The third pole was in an undamaged box but pole doesnt work as well as the other two. The protecting tip was missing and one of the tightening clutches spins and never locks down securely.
Not worth it     On: 2008-08-02

The pole arrived broken. The telescoping didnt lock, and theres no way to fix it. Thats what I get for buying cheap.
Acceptable trekking poles     On: 2008-07-18

The poles were as described. They are sturdy, easy to adjust and lightweight. They are a good starter pair. They do not have all the bells and whistles of Leki but are good as a start for me and my wife.
Great value     On: 2008-07-09

I love my Swiss Gear hiking pole. Its not the best on the market, but it works great for my needs. I just picked up another one for my husband because he kept taking mine.
Fell apart in under ten miles     On: 2008-06-15

I bought these to see if I liked using trekking poles, and Im glad I was only expecting a trial run. The handgrip fell off of one somewhere around mile 7 and the inner workings popped out when I then retracted it for easier carrying. Now to buy a real pair.
Worth way more than $10     On: 2008-05-08

I began backpacking about 3 years ago and was given and bought a lot of beginner quality gear. Since then Ive been able to be out about 30days/nights, mostly in the Sierra, and have upgraded every piece of gear I started with. Except for these poles. These guys have been everywhere with me and wont quit! Ive worn through the plastic caps and worn the metal beneath down to nothing. Ive gotten them caught in rocks and put quite a bit of pressure on them but they havent bent or broken, Im pretty sure I would have snapped a lighter weight or carbon pole.
Theyre not light but they get the job done, and for me, theyve worked as well as a $200 carbon fiber pole could have. The only issue Ive ever had with them is in the locking mechanism- my girlfriend bought a pair and the lock on one broke right away. If you buy them test them out in the store to make sure youve got a good pair because it seems based on the other reviews that there is a quality issue from the factory.
Listen, theyre $20 for a pair and Ive had mine so long that I now show them off and scoff at people who blew $150 for some plastic Lekis.
Machu Picchu or Bust     On: 2008-05-02

My wife and I and another couple trained every weekend with these poles for 5 months to do the Inca Trail, from which we have just returned. We had bought them on-line from Wal Mart for approximately $11/pole and had them shipped for free to a local store. Our excellent Peruvian guides offered to buy them from us several times. We made a gift of the poles to the guides at Machu Picchu. The poles worked flawlessly despite heavy use and looked almost as good as new.
One of the worst...0 out 5     On: 2008-04-04

I have bought 4 of these and believe it is a manufacturer defect. Out of the 4 poles, only 1 of these will tighten correctly. The rest collapse even without any resistance at all.

Im not going to comment on the comfort or other features. Basic functionality is simply not there.

Id give it 0 stars if I could. Amazon requires at least 1 though.
Swiss Gear Breakdown     On: 2008-04-01

I recently saw that the Swiss Gear hiking poles were sold at WalMart for a very reasonable price under $20.

Stopped by to see one, that was even in blue to match our mountain bikes.
As I fiddled with the extension and shock absorbing feature, I put some downward pressure on the handle.

You guessed it, the pole snapped off at the lower adjuster. Completely broke in half! So, Im back looking at Black Diamond with their flick lock and lifetime guarantee, albeit for $70-$90.

But, I cant imagine one of these Swiss Gears breaking while coming down a trail with too much pressure. Look out below and call the ambulance!

I did report the breakdown to a WalMart clerk.
Great pole for the price     On: 2008-03-08

I bought these poles last year and hiked all through the Austrian Alps and had no problems with them. Since the price was so low I was a bit hesitant to head up for a week of hiking along the peaks of the alps, but they held up just fine. Theyre not a the lightest poles in the world, but if youre a casual hiker youve got nothing to worry about. These poles are just fine.
Economical and reliable     On: 2008-02-26

I bought two of these for $10 each a year ago just to give them a try. I did not have high expectations since they were so cheap, but they are still on the trail with me. Quite frankly, I assumed they would break or collapse or give out somehow, but such is not the case. I have used them in mud, rocks, and sand from the AT trails in N. Georgia to the sand in Central Florida and they just keep working. I have not had any problems with the tips coming out. I take two of them with me when I backpack and use them for tent poles at night. They do the job and if you leave one somewhere youre only out $10. Works for me.
Good poles for the money     On: 2008-02-11

I read other reviews before purchasing these hiking poles. I did not want to spend a lot of money on them, as I am not an avid hiker...yet. I used them twice for snow-shoeing and they are great! The baskets remained in place (although my friend had the same poles and she lost one of hers in the snow) and the poles held up my weight. (I am not light!) Overall, these are great poles for the money. Highly recommended!
So pleased!     On: 2008-02-08

My husband had me order this for him. I did and we got an e-mail stating that you received our purchase request. The very NEXT day we got another e-mail stating it had been shipped. And .. if it wasnt the next day, it was the day after that and THERE IT WAS! Not only are we impressed with the quality of the product, but we were blown away with the order/ship/delivery time! Thanks Amazon, for your purchase processing!!

The hiking pole is exactly what he had hoped for. Light, versatile, and guaranteed to last! VERY PLEASED!!
helpful if you are going to hike     On: 2008-01-12

We used it during our trips to great canyon, bryce canyon and arches this winter. It helped a lot during our hiking especially on trails with snow. It also has a built-in compass. The only drawback is it doesnt include a flash light which could be very useful at night.
Broke First Use     On: 2008-01-12

The guard down by the tip fell off the first time I used it. I had to circle back to find it. The compass is useless- hard to see and inaccurate (at least it think) i bought two poles so the compasses are double useless- or maybe one was right- they point different directions- but still I give it a three because it is so much cheaper than all of the other walking poles. The other problem- if you dont tighten them up they can slip- after you tighten them up, dont expect to easily retract them for storage.
Great value     On: 2008-01-06

Yes, they may not be as durable as the expensive models, and are slightly heavier, but you get 90% of the functionality of the expensive brands at 20% of the price. After I got my first set, I immediately went online and ordered a half dozen more, just to have on hand when the first set breaks. Well, Im still on the first set, and theyve been on top of Half Dome, 10 days inside the Tahoe Wilderness, and hundreds of miles of local trails. Im very impressed by the durability of a supposed "cheap" hiking pole.
Strong     On: 2007-09-12

Excellent product. Im a heavy person and was able to put alot of weight on this walking stick.
Tips wear quickly, but rugged everywear else     On: 2007-08-31

If you dont mind not having tips wear away after 70 miles, these are worth many times the price. I have to figure out a way to modify them to have REAL carbide tips... then they will be 5 stars!

Great for the price     On: 2007-05-23

Although the tip/round piece fell off when I first used the hiking pole, it has otherwise served me well. Lightweight, telescopes down to tuck in my pack easily, and is sturdy enough to survive a few pretty strenuous hikes in Shenandoah. Unbeatable price.
a little shakey     On: 2007-05-12

I bought this for the rubber tip! However, it seems difficult to change the length and keep it screwed firmly-it moves when you lean on it. Maybe its a defect?Swiss Gear Hiking Pole
Good value..     On: 2007-03-09

I bought this hiking pole to take geocaching with me. Its sturdy, lightweight, and retracts for easy storage. Its also nice that it absorbs shocks. A good product for the money.
Suggested Retail: $12.99     On: 2007-03-03

I went to Swiss gear website to check out the pole and see if they had any others. This is the only pole they have which isnt saying much for the brand, but I found that the suggested retail is $4 lower to what Amazon is selling it for. Just seems like the seller should always be lower or at least the same price. Even though Amazon is jacking up the price its still really cheap. Probably too cheap to be any good.
Worth It.     On: 2007-02-21

I bought to use when I run with my snowshoes instead of lugging around my ski poles. They are compact, sturdy, and cheap. Much better than paying $65+ for Atlas poles at a local ski shop.
good and cheap     On: 2007-01-15

Gave it to my husband for xmas. Works great. Adjustable height allows my kids to use it too.
Quality control problem     On: 2007-01-12

I bought two hiking poles, which includes a tiny compass each but one them points 180 degrees of the other (ie one points to the South instead North).

On the other hand I am totally dissatisfied of the way EACH pole was packed in a HUGE BOX. Finally I paid a lot for shipping air and two small poles.

For international purchase thats inefficient. Please review this issue
Swiss Gear SG66201 Hiking Pole, aluminum alloy telescoping (red, black)     On: 2007-01-11

Great Pole for the price.. You cant turn off the Anti-shock. Also, they only ship 1 per Big Box.
Excellent particularly at its low price.     On: 2007-01-10

I have a stabilty problem and the hiking poles help a lot in walking. There was a recent article in the FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) magazine singing the praises of all the additional health benefits these trakking poles have.
The only critcism I have from ordering via Amazon was there was no way I could select black rather than red, so I have gregarious red.
Great for the Price     On: 2007-01-09

Looks like this is what I need for short hikes. A little on the heavy side, but good for day hikes.
Cheap and functional     On: 2006-12-03

We bought a pair of these at WalMart on a whim since they were so darn cheap! We used them on the Appalachian Trail and on a hiking trip through the Swiss Alps. They work great and have held up fine under rather stressful conditions. While theyre a bit heavier than the fancy name-brand poles, theyre no less rugged and only a fraction the cost. Whats not to like?
GREAT TREK POLES     On: 2006-11-03

THIS TREK POLE IS JUST WHAT YOU NEED. IT COMES WITH TWO TIPS AND A COMPASS IN THE GRIP. VERY STRONG POLE FOR THE PRICE. THANKS SWISS GEAR FOR GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.
Excellent for Bush Whacking     On: 2006-11-03

My primary use for this was to give me something to help me stay upright during geocaching, and to have something for bushwhacking. If you are into Geocaching you will understand! [...]

After falling down the side of a hill and getting a bit scratched up, getting this Hiking Pole has worked very well to keep me balanced in weird places. Also, its handy for moving branches out of the way (i.e. bushwhacking) when necessary!
There's better products out there.     On: 2006-09-24

This is a reasonably priced trekking pole thats lightweight and fairly sturdy. However, the first time I used it, the carbide tip fell out. I saw some of these at Wal-Mart and examined the tips. Quite a few of them had already fallen out prior to even being purchased. I even tried gluing mine into the staff, but it fell out again during the first use. I threw away the tip and made my own with a nail. So even though this is a well-made pole (except for the crappy tip), I dont recommend it (due to the crappy tip!). Instead, get a Kaito pole. I got one for Christmas and its awesome. Light-weight, well built, sturdy, the tip hasnt fallen out yet(!), and it has extra features (camera screw-mount, compass, thermometer). The Kaitos are only a little more in price than this Swiss Gear. They are worth the extra cost.
