Not good for books     On: 2008-08-01

I bought this backpack because I liked the idea of unzipping the smaller pack to use as a purse, and zipping them together to head to work/school. But the larger bag is not suitable for books. It has straps that will hold clothing in place, like a suitcase does. I gave it just three stars because the description and images on amazon did not give enough information about the internal organization of the bag.
Plastic sheet "internal frame" crumbled     On: 2008-03-29

This backpack claims to have an "internal frame" which is actually a flimsy plastic sheet. I barely used the backpack, but after about six months the plastic frame started crumbling. All the plastic shards ended up in a pile at the bottom of the pack. I was forced to cut open a hole in the pack in order to remove all the pieces. The plastic was so soft that it continued to crumble as I handled it. Id say this is pretty inexcusable.

The overall design is decent and it looks good. However, I needed the frame for support, so I dont recommend it for hiking or heavy loads.
used this bag around the world     On: 2008-01-02

It worked well enough that I used it for a 10 and 1/2 month trip. Depending on the airline, the main bag is small enough that, when separated from the day pack, it can be used as a carry-on. However, again it depends on the airline and aircraft. (Some airlines only allow 1 carry-on bag, and some airlines have smaller size allowances for carry-on luggage.) I bought a small bag so I could carry it on, but I quickly found myself checking it anyway because of the liquid restrictions on carry-on luggage. Also, even though it is small its cumbersome to have to keep it with you in the airport. Its just easier to give it to the airlines and let them deal with it.

If you intend on putting locks on the zippers note that you can do so but the zipper handles are made of fabric and not metal, so anyone with a pair of scissors could cut it and get in your bag. (However, I never had anything stolen.) Also, there is no way to lock the sunglasses holder on the day pack.

The bag is pretty comfortable IMHO. I fit a small laptop (VAIO TX series with 11.1 inch screen) in the day pack.

If you want a bag that will force you to pack lightly, get this bag. It held up fairly well--i.e. nothing broke. However, after over 20 flights and using this bag every day for the better part of a year, its showing a good amount of wear and tear. Next time I travel I will get a bag thats just a tiny bit bigger, has metal zipper handles, has mesh pockets on the outside of the daypack. Lastly, I think it would be good to have a bag that has a pull-out waterproof cover; this one doesnt.

All in all, for the money its a great bag.

Good stuff...     On: 2007-11-05

Bought this travel pack a few months ago... but was only able to use it to its potential last weekend...

fits a lot of stuff in there.. and the side opening makes it easier to pack and unpack stuff..
the cushioning on the back is good...

Its good to put in a couple of days stuff...

the only negative abt it.. after completely stuffing it.. the balance on the bag was not absolutely vertical causing me to bend forwards a little bit to negate the effect..
Cool idea - bad design     On: 2007-09-14

i took this to europe for a few weeks, i really liked the idea of two bags zipping into one unit. over all a good bag, and i really like that the larger of the two pieces has a shoulder strap (like a suitcase) and compartment to hide the shoulder straps. the biggest problem, and reason i would not use it for backpacking again, is it is not balanced.

when full and zipped into one bag, it is top-heavy, and sticks out way too far behind you. basically, it pulls you backwards, so you must lean forward a bit to feel balanced with your center of gravity. i read a review that mentioned this issue, disregarded it, and now feel it was seriously under-emphasized.
Pretty good bag     On: 2007-06-19

This is pretty good travel bag. Very comfortable and has good space. I used to for some 4 day trips and it is handy when you are planning to use public transportation. You can take off the extra bag if not needed to reduce the size and not carrying this big odd thing on domestic trips.

The reason I gave this a 4 star is that the main compartment doesnt have any pockets at all.

Regardless I think it is a good bag and looks pretty decent when carrying around.
A good bag and a good value     On: 2007-05-29

I purchased this bag for a two-week trip around Greece and found it to be great for my needs. Its relatively roomy, yet the main pack just meets carry-on requirements and the small day-pack easily fits under an airplane seat. Its pretty comfortable to wear, with nicely padded straps on the main pack and good straps on the detachable day-pack. The shoulder strap is convenient as well--the main bag can be carried as a shoulder bag or with the padded suitcase handle if desired. The day-pack can also be clipped onto the front of the bag, which can be good both for security and to distribute weight more evenly.

The bag was also pretty durable, although one of the metal clips on the shoulder strap came off when the strap got caught in an airport x-ray machine (not sure this is really the bags fault though).

Overall I am quite satisfied, especially for the price. Just keep in mind this is a travel bag--its great for carrying on your back from hotel to hotel while traveling, but its not one you would want to be wearing 100% of the time on your trip. (A metal-frame hiking-oriented pack might be better for that purpose.)

We used this pack to hike in Peru and it worked great. The only negatives were no water bottle harness on the day pack and no pocket for passports or other documents on the side against your back. Overall, we were satisfied
