![]() Men's Danner Radical 452 GTX By: Danner Average Rating: 4.5 Total Reviews: 9 More Information Soles Let Them Down Ive had these boots for about a year but only recently started wearing them regularly. In that time Ive only worn them on difficult terrain a few times. The soles are GONE! The boots look great, as they should being practically new. They are quite comfortable since theyve been broken in. But Ill be forced to trash them soon as the sole is just about smooth and they cannot be resoled. Too bad, I grew up respecting the Danner reputation. These shoes just havent lived up to that reputation. Wonderful for the toes! A fairly avid hiker, I had been struggling for some time to find a boot that would prevent the pain in my (relatively long) toes that I usually experienced during long hikes, especially during downhill stretches. I stumbled on these boots after reading another review commenting on the spaciousness of the TerraForce toe box... sure enough, these boots did the trick, relieving at least 80% of the previous discomfort. The extra room is visible, barely, as a slightly-flared toe area, a bit reminescent of a side-cut ski. The soles are also noticably stiffer than my last pair (Hi-Tec V-Lites) and seemed much more supportive. Overall, although considerably more expensive, these boots are a great improvement. Im hooked, and will be buying Danners for the foreseeable future. Excellent design Ive just worn out my second pair of these boots, and Im ordering my third pair. I wear these boots almost every day and they are comfortable and dry. They feel good right out of the box. Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are the most comfortable boots Ive ever had straight out of the box. They look good and feel even better. Highly recommended!!!! Great Product Best show I have ever worn. Wear them 14hours / day every day. Water proof, warm in winter, cool in summer. Best price I have ever found was from Amazon (1/3 off) regular price. Old Faithful No reason to even try a different boot. I have had several pair of these over the years and you just cant beat them for comfort and durability. They fit perfect right out of the box. I got a really good price on these-have paid as much as $120 for the same pair in previous years. Good Boot Overall, a good boot. The Gor-Tex lining is super and the boot itself provides a great deal of stability. Comfortable, but be prepared for a 50+ mile break-in period. My only gripe is some irritation against my skin at the top of the boot, but it seems to be lessening with break-in. For the money I paid, Id buy again. nice boots by: joerevolver8 On: 2006-12-20 took a while to break in, nice after that . Too bad they now make them in China, used to be made in USA Sometimes being Radical is a good thing I have 43 years of hiking, backpacking and peak bagging experience. In recent years I migrated, like most people, from all-leather European-style mountain boots to lighter fabric/leather combination boots. They seemed to work well for a while but two years ago I started experiencing significant pain in my toes, instep and heel. I concluded that my lightweight boots from a well known outdoor supplier were a contributing factor, if not the root of the problem because they didnt provide sufficient torsional (side-to-side) rigidity. Danners advertisement for the "Terra Force" boot support system convinced me to buy the Radical GTX two years ago. The first thing I liked about the Radicals was the roomy box toe area that eliminated occasional rubbing problems caused by my prior boots smaller toe box. There was also plenty of instep space for my high arch. Unlike many boots that now come in a single width the Radicals multiple widths allow a wider fit in the ball of the foot while retaining the snug heel fit that prevents blisters. The Terra Force torsional support has not diminished after 250+ miles of hiking. Besides day hikes and 2-3 day backpacks Ive used the Radicals with good results on off-trail scrambles to summits in the High Sierra and North Cascades, occasionally crossing snow steep enough to require an ice axe. Despite offering much more support than my prior lightweight boots the Radicals are hardly heavier (my size 10.5-EEs weigh 52 ounces). Best of all, after switching to the Radicals my toe and instep problems ceased almost immediately, and my heel problems have gradually diminished substantially, all of which I attribute to the superior support of the Terra Force system. In my opinion these boots have too many seams and different pieces of leather and fabric, but Im not marking down my rating because thats how virtually all lightweight, relatively inexpensive boots are made these days. |
