![]() Eureka! Casper 15-Degree Mummy Sleeping Bag (Regular) By: Eureka Average Rating: 4.5 Total Reviews: 15 More Information Too large for bike camping or backpacking This is a pretty good bag to sleep in, and is very well constructed. The exterior material seems very robust, but is not the most comfortable. The 15-degree rating isnt right at all; on a trip down the cool and foggy Oregon Coast, I began to feel uncomfortably chilly at around 30 degrees. However, the bags main problem is that it doesnt pack down well -- a problem not helped by the mediocre compression sack that is included. This bag is simply too large for use on a backpacking trip or bike tour, and the space it takes up is space better used for food or water. A far better solution for any summer or fall camping would be to find a cheap down bag (30 degree down bags dont cost much more than this one) and a bulkier sleeping pad. Light weight backpacking sleeping bag. Great 3 season bag for the price for the occasional backpacker. Down bags may be lighter but I was concerned if they got wet. Not too bad.. I am a thru-hiker, used this for weeks/months on end. + Temp + Weight - Too silky :) - Hard to get used to the snugness. + Can unzip a bit and let the arms out + zipper never unzipped in the middle of the night - 2 way zipper starts at knees (read: no feet vent) + has its own compression bag to carry - the pillow easily easily falls out of the pocket for it Great Value, Good Quality, not 15 degrees though. The sleeping bag comes with a great compression bag. The bag is compact and lightweight. I used this bag on our first winter snap in Florida. The temperatures foretasted the camping weekend in the lower 30s. The sleeping bag fitting was snug for my 59" frame. When temperatures dipped into the night, I felt the cold penetrating my clothes. I think Ill need to wear thermals for our next winter trips. (We rarely own winter clothes in living in South Florida) Overall, great bag. kept me quite warm at 13 degrees. I picked this bag up and took it on a backpacking trip which turned cold. The first night I went to bed and my thermometer said 27 degrees at 10 pm. I was very toasty in the bag. The second night it was 18 degrees and I awoke to sleet hitting my tarp at 5 am. I was also quite warm and comfortable. The last night was 13 degrees at 10 pm (Im not sure how low it went beyond that). I was warm and comfortable in the bag until about 5 am. This night I used the bag in a tent instead of under a tarp and the moisture in trapped inside from two people and a big dog dripped back on the end of my bag. I woke up and was warm, but my feet were cold. I turned on a light and looked at the bag to discover ice had formed on the bag where my feet had rubbed against the walls of the tent. I put my sweater over the icy spot and went back to sleep. My feet were warm the next morning. All three nights I slept in a t-shirt and boxers. Normally, in cold weather I sleep in my clothes which add an extra layer of insulation, but after reading the other reviews I decided to throw caution to the wind and test the bag out. I noticed that the bag will not keep you warm unless you cinch the mummy drawstring tight and seal the air out of the bag. I can only guess that other reviewers either didnt cinch the string or fell asleep against the outside wall of a tent. Also, this bag is a bit big for my tastes as I like to hike with a tiny alpine pack. I used my bigger bag (its about what a normal backpacker would use) on this trip and it fit easily inside the pack. Overall, I think its a great bag. I wish it didnt weight 3 pounds, but for the price I doubt one could find a cheaper bag that has this temp rating. Well made but snug bag I ordered two of these sleeping bags for me and my 11 year old son. We enjoy short backpacking trips, so the Eureka offered a warm bag at reasonable weight (without the cost of a down sleeping bag). When our sleeping bags arrived, both my son and I tested the bag on our den floor. Based on our trial, I returned one of the bags, keeping one for my son to use. Basically, this bag does not provide sufficient room across the check unless you are a below average size. I am about 6 foot-2 inches tall, and about 205 lbs. I could fit in the bag, but could not see myself being comfortable if I chose to fully zip the bag, sleep on my side, etc. With the bag fully zipped, I could fit in the bag by laying flat on my back, with both arms by my sides (still it was a bit snug). My son used his Eureka one one of our first cool weather hikes (and had previously tried it at a local campground). For this trip, the evening temperature dropped to just above freezing (most likely about 34 degrees). My son wore some thermals and a beanie, and said he was comfortable in this bag. We also toss a couple of Hothands 2 Value Pack 10 Pair in our bag to add a bit of warmth. Since I found this bag to be too constricting, and since I am a very warm sleeper, I ordered the Slumberjack Super Guide 30F Regular Right Sleeping Bag which I noticed has nearly the same weight as the Eureka. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase in terms of quality, weight, and warmth. However, the Eureka only gets 3 stars due to the size of the bag. Great bag at a great price! I purchased the Casper to use on fall camping trips in the NY Adirondack Mtns. I chose it over the North Face Cats Meow due to complaints of that bags cold weather performance. I was impressed with the look, feel and overall weight of this bag. With a little effort, it compresses nicely into its tiny stuff sack taking up far less space in my backpack than my previous bag. When you take it out, it quickly becomes lofty again! During my recent trip, the overnight temps fell to the mid 30s and I remained comfortable. I sleep in a 2 man dome tent and use a canvas "Allagash" cot. When I added a thermal sleeping pad, I felt almost as if I were sleeping in my bed at home! This bag is very comfortable with lots of toe space but tends to be tight in the chest area. I am 510" 220 lbs and feel near the limit of its capacity. If you are a larger person or just prefer more room, you should consider a different bag. At 1/3 the cost of most comparable bags, the Casper is a great value and has the weight, size and features of the more expensive bags. If the fit is right, I highly recommend it. Great for Backpacking This is a great sleeping bag for Backpacking, it is lightweight and compresses easily to fit into a sleeping bag compartment of a backpack. Havent tested it for 15 degrees but kept us warm on a cold rainy night in June at an elevation of 3500ft. We got completely wet and the outer layer of the sleeping bag also got wet, but it still kept us warm. Great bag....but 15 degree rating is optimistic I am a 63" 225lb. male and not exactly a cold sleeper. I bought this bag because it was an excellent price-weight-cold weather rating ratio. However, on one night that reached 18-20 degrees F, I found myself to be shivering in the bag. I would say this bag is great for light weight, but if you are expecting anything less than 25 degrees, select a warmer bag instead of this one. The 15 degree rating is not accurate but the bag is very comfortable otherwise good sleeping bag, bad amazon I would not have purchased this bag from amazon except i had a gift certificate. When i got the bag, the manufacture date was well over a year ago which means it had been stuffed in its stuff sack for at least a year which is by any account not good for the temperature rating of this bag. Other than that, its a great bag for the price/weight/size. Nice for the price Nice bag with nice features. Im 6-3" 240 lbs, if youre bigger or wider than me, dont buy this bag! I manage but its not roomy around the arms/chest. Ive tested this bag pretty thoroughly. I tried it with a nice sleeping pad and *no* wind at 20F, I was comforable at first but started to chill enough to wake me up about 5 hours in. Dont get me wrong, if youre protected from wind and moisture and have a good sleep pad, at 15F youll probably live, but not quite comfy. Still this is a backpacking sleeping bag, and most people dont choose to backpack in winter conditions. If you have to, put on a couple layers of expedition-weight polypro, a couple pair of wool socks and a balaclava and youll have no trouble meeting or exceeding that +15f rating. As reported by others, it fits well in the sleeping bag compartment of my pack. Comes with a very nice, effective compression sack. I bought the Long and theres plenty of length for my height. What else to say? If it was down it would be either half the size (when compressed), or 20F warmer, and at least twice the price. Also, because this is a synthetic bag, it dries much faster than a down bag, and works better when damp. To an extent "you get what you pay for" but on its own this is a nice, 3-season backpacking sleeping bag, which Id have no problem recommending to others. Tempted to buy the similar 0-bag and +30 bag in the same series! Eureka bag is compact and a great bargain I had four requirements when searching for a sleeping bag for a recent camping trip. The bag needed to be compact, light, moderately priced, and warm. The first three this bag passed with flying colors but the fourth it came up a little short. Based on the price and reviews I choose this Eureka bag and overall I was impressed. The bag is light and the stuff sack works great plus it fits nicely into the lower pocket of my hiking backpack. The bag itself feels nice and it has a few touches like a Velcro strap to hold the zipper handle and an internal pocket that makes it feel like a more expensive product. As far as warmth goes it did pretty well. On my trip the first night it got down into the mid 30s and the bag kept me warm. The second night it got down to about freezing and I woke up early in the morning a little chilly. I grabbed a couple of hand warmers, tossed them in the bag and I was warm again. The 15 degree rating may be overly optimistic but I would say that if you are going to be in above freezing temps then this bag will be fine. However if you will be getting into much colder temps you may want to invest in a higher end goose down bag. I could see this bag being tight around the shoulders if you are a bigger guy/girl. Im 62 and about 170 lbs and the bag fit me fine. I actually went with the long but it is a little too long... I would have been better off with the regular. Also, I would recommend paring any sleeping bag with a light weight pad (preferably self-inflating) to help with comfort and warmth. Eureka Casper Sleeping Bag These sleeping bags are awesome! They are light weight and soft and compact well. I love how you can zip two of them together, even a long and a regular size. They zip together around the shin area. so you each still have your own foot area but you can still snuggle. I have not had a chance to test them out as far as the 15 degree rating goes but Ill bet they are toasty. Great sleeping bag for the price I bought this bag for a week long camping and canoeing trip to Canada. The bag is very light and compact. Temperatures at night were in the low 40s (Farenheit), and the bag was a bit too warm for temperatures that high. Plenty of foot room, although the bag is a little tighter in the chest area than it should be. However, you cannot beat the features on this sleeping bag for the price. Very light and very warm bag. Great bag! Very light and yet very warm. Fits very well in bottom of back pack. Great addition to supplies for backpacking campouts and hikes. Excellent Bag This is an amazing product and it is an absolute steal for the price its being offered at. I slept outside in 35 degree weather and was completely warm and have yet to take it down closer to 15, but my guess is that it would do just fine. Packs down to a nice, small, compact size that would fit perfectly in most any UL backpack and the stuff sack has a great compression system. The only draw back would be that if youre a big guy, tall or round, it might be a little tight around the knees/chest. This doesnt affect me at all however and I cant believe I got such a great bag at such a low price. Definitely recommend. sleeping bag review The Eureka Casper sleeping bag is excellent. It is warm, light weight and compact. It is a great bag for camping or backpacking. The included compression sack allows it to fit into an internal frame backpack. It is large enough for an adult to fit into but small and light enough for a youth to easily carry. It satisfies the temperature rating and makes staying warm enough possible. To receive these qualities at the affordable price was amazing. Great bag This appears to be a high-quality sleeping bag which is very comfortable and warm. |
