I took this filter on my Appalachian Trail hike in 2005, and it broke within the first 100 miles. I followed all instructions, kept it in its special pouch, etc. I even sang to it. It worked great for a few days, worked intermittently for a few more days, and then quit on me. I took it back for a refund.
It works, but it is too delicate for long distance backpacking. Id recommend a filter, or better yet, a chemical purifier (e.g., iodine, Aqua Mira).

I used the SteriPen for the first time this weekend while backpacking in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. It has a number of advantages over a traditional filter, not least of which is that it is lighter and doesnt require regular cleaning. (Im hoping it doesnt crack as easily as my last couple ceramic filters did.) I found I could purify a quart in under a minute with the steripen. I would recommend that you also get the pre-filter to remove particulates. Its fairly cheap and will improve water taste.
