 Bear Bell - Red By: Coghlan's Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 1 More Information Bear Bell  On: 2010-07-04I got this for my wife almost as a joke but we did use it on a couple of long hikes in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State this summer. I guess it worked, because we were not harassed by any bears! In all seriousness though, bears would just assume stay clear of people, so the experts say that the best way to avoid an encounter is to let them know you are coming. This product certainly makes noise as you move around on a hike, and I believe that it is indeed effective. Be warned though, when you are half way up a high peak, and its hot, and humid, and the black flies are biting, the incessant sound of Santas sleigh maybe a little too much to bear (no pun intended). The magnetic silencer mostly works, but its a little tricky. The metal ball inside the bell has to be right at the bottom of the bell for the magnet to immobilize it completely. Even then, it will break free once in while as you move around. The product performs exactly as well as I expected it to. I think it makes a charming little gift for the outdoors type person. For the price, its worth it just for the fun of giving it to someone and having a good laugh. Not eaten by bear yet!  On: 2009-05-08I do not know if this actually works for its intended purpose but as of yet, I have never seen a bear even when deep in bear country as I often am. Since I have not be mauled yet, Im guessing it works. It does make considerable noise when walking and makes me want to keep away from myself also. After finally getting out of range of all the noisy ATVs and motorcycles, I now have another thing to disturb the peace in the woods, contraticting the reason I go there. And, as a photographer, I would like to eventually see and photograph a few bears from a good distance. So, do I like it or not? I guess it is kind of like DEET mosquito repellant. It keeps me from getting bitten (I think)but I hate wearing it. For now, I think Ill keep wearing it. And the DEET too! Hey, it allows me to save my anti-bear pepper spray for the ATVs! Now thats a plus! Thats worth an extra star all by itself!!! a bear reminder  On: 2008-08-04I recommend a bell for any one or any dog who lives in a black bear area, since I dont know anything about brown bears. Just what the description says On: 2007-09-01These were useful - especially for entertaining & tracking the kids. Actually, general opinion is that hikers should carry bear spray instead.
