![]() Bear Vault BV450 Solo Bear Resistant Food Canister Transparent Blue, 440cu in By: Bear Average Rating: 3.5 Total Reviews: 3 More Information Perfect size Bear canister This is just the right size for a single backpacker for a 4 day trip. The new latch seems more bear resistant (dont plan on seeing if it is bear "PROOF". The larger version of this may also be a bit weaker because of its size. I wish I had this instead... Government agencies decide which bear canisters to approve, only those makes and models on the list are allowed. Tickets are issued to offenders. Of course most areas are regulation free and the PCT method is often used instead of a canister. Yosemite NP has this new BV450 on their conditionally approved list, Google their list "Yosemite Allowed Food Storage Containers". The advantage of this model is that it weighs less and takes up less room than the competition, such as the old standby Garcia Backpackers Cache. Garcia 812 Weight 2 lbs. 12 oz. Dimensions 12 x 8.8 inches Material(s) ABS polymer Capacity 614 cubic inches BV 450 Weight 2 lbs. 1 oz. Dimensions 8.7 x 8.3 inches Material(s) Polycarbonate Capacity 440 cubic inches ==> EDIT: This model does not require a coin (quarter) or screwdriver to open, but unfortunately the REI website informs that a bear has therefore learned to open this make and model. They say this has caused one small area to remove approval (New York State, Marcy Dam area). It is still officially legal in other areas, including Yosemite (as of Feb. 2010). |
